When a retailer should use an invoice
A sales receipt confirms a checkout purchase that was paid; an invoice is useful when a business customer will pay later, a special order requires a deposit, or goods are delivered on account. Include the customer, invoice and order numbers, SKUs, quantities, prices, discounts, tax, and due date.
Special orders and customer accounts
Show deposits and gift-card or store-credit applications separately. For special orders, identify the product specification and expected delivery. Business accounts may require a PO and net terms, while ordinary paid transactions should be closed with a receipt rather than an open balance.
